A Plain & Fancy Kind Of Weekend…

Hi there!  Happy Monday to you!  I can hardly believe it’s Monday already.  I feel like the weekends just keep going by faster and faster.  I’m not exactly sure why but they fly by!  I wish they didn’t.  What did you do this weekend?  The weather was beautiful this weekend except for Friday.  It rained on and off the entire day on Friday and that continued through the evening.  It was quite humid outside too which made for bad hair conditions.

On Friday, Mike and I decided to use garlic and herb pizza dough that we had to make pizza in the cast iron skillet.  I decided that I was going to see if my stomach could tolerate tomato sauce again.  I was still going to be careful but I wanted to try it since I haven’t had tomato sauce in months now.

I ended up wiping some of the sauce off just because I was nervous about having too much of it at one time.  The pizza was like a deep dish pizza.  It tasted great!  The garlic and herb pizza dough was a nice change from the regular pizza dough.  The entire time it was cooking in the oven, our house smelled like Pizza Hut!  It was pretty funny.  It smelled like the Pizza Hut breadsticks.  I loved the smell.  It was taking me back to when I was younger and would get a free personal pan-pizza for reading books.  Those were the days!

The rest of the night, Mike and I spent catching up on dvr shows.  We finally watched the first episode of Nashville and I have to say that I actually really like it.  I still need to watch the second episode.  I was happy that I liked it though.  It kind of reminded me of Smash which I also really like.  So we shall see how the next episode goes.

On Saturday, Mike and I woke up pretty early.  We had to plans to go to the famous Shady Maple for breakfast.

The Shady Maple

The Shady Maple is a massive buffet.  I have heard from numerous people that they have the best breakfast.  They will make omelettes and any type of pancakes you want right in front of you.  I have been wanting to go here for such a long time now.  It was packed when we arrived.  We had to wait in line for a while to pay.  Then we had to wait to be seated.  Once they seat you, they tell you about the food stations and you have to get your own drinks so you don’t tip a waitress.  I’ve never seen that before but it did make things easier by getting whatever drinks you wanted.

Mike and I were so overwhelmed and I kept thinking, I don’t know what I am going to eat because of my stomach.  I decided to get pumpkin pancakes and a few other things.  The few other things, I probably shouldn’t have eaten and I’ll explain why in a bit.  We both weren’t that impressed to be honest.  I think we had such high expectations for this place and they really fell flat.  I’m not a huge fan of buffets because I cannot see how the food is prepared and you don’t know how long it’s been sitting out.  I wouldn’t go back.  Have you ever been to the Shady Maple?  Are you a fan of buffets?

Once we were done there, we ventured to York to visit our friends, Russ, Kristen and their daughter Kyleigh.  We haven’t seen them since the beginning of September and we had never seen their house.  We were really excited to finally see it!  When we arrived, we hung out for a while and then watched our wedding video with them while Kyleigh took a nap.  Once she woke up, we ventured to the outlets in Lancaster.  Mike and I didn’t end up buying anything.

I started getting severe pains in my stomach to the point where it felt worse than when I needed my appendix out.  It was spreading around my entire back.  I didn’t understand what was going on.  I didn’t want to be a party pooper and I feel like my stomach ruins everything so I kept trekking along.  In reality, I probably should have told Mike that I needed to go home but I am VERY stubborn.

We decided to go out to dinner to a place that Kristen recommended, the Plain and Fancy Farm.  They have two dining options.  You can either sit with other people and have a farm style meal that is served family style or you can sit with your party and order from the menu.  Since I couldn’t eat anything on the farm style menu, we decided to sit at our own table.  I only managed to eat a little bit during this dinner because my pain kept getting more intense.

We started off with the most delicious iced cinnamon raisin bread that I have ever tasted in my entire life.

Iced cinnamon raisin bread

It was more like a dessert than an appetizer.  It was so heavenly.  I wish my stomach would have cooperated and I could have had more than just a little taste.  From what I had, it was absolutely delicious!

They also gave rolls with apple butter which I forgot to take a picture of.  Let me tell you, the apple butter was phenomenal!!!!  I am definitely regretting not purchasing the apple butter.  I wish I would have bought it.  I keep telling Mike that we need to take another trip there to get it.  I am dreaming of that apple butter.  It’s bad.

For my meal, I decided to get an open-faced hot turkey sandwich.  I ordered mashed potatoes and cinnamon apples (which I forgot to take a picture of) as my sides.

My dinner plate

The turkey was so fresh!  The mashed potatoes were truly homemade because there were chunks of potatoes in them.  It was delicious.  The cinnamon apples were fresh apples slow roasted with cinnamon.  They were heavenly.  I absolutely LOVED the food there.  I ended up bringing the majority of my meal home which I am excited for the leftovers for lunch today.  This restaurant was incredible.  I really wish we would have been able to get dessert and that I could have enjoyed myself more.  I highly recommend going to the Plain & Fancy if you want a traditional Amish meal.  It was even featured on the Travel Channel show Man vs. Food.  So this is a pretty popular stop in Lancaster.  I am so thankful Kristen mentioned this place.

We had such a wonderful time spending the afternoon/night with Russ, Kristen and Kyleigh.  I wish they lived closer.  Once we left, I had the worst pains in my stomach the entire car ride home.  I felt so bad.  Mike was driving like 85 mph to get us home to see if I was going to decide to go to the hospital or not.  I ultimately decided against going because I didn’t feel as though they would be able to do anything for me.  Plus, I have those two procedures scheduled in 2 weeks and that will give us an answer.  So I tried to force myself to fall asleep and pray for the pain to go away.

I spent the majority of Sunday lounging on the sofa.  I left the house only to go to Bed, Bath and Beyond, and the supermarket with Mike.  We were only out about 2 hours before coming home so I could rest.  My stomach still felt off but I didn’t know what else to do.  I thought maybe I need to up my fiber intake.  So for dinner I decided to roast butternut squash, and an apple with cinnamon and roast mushrooms.

My pasta

I wasn’t a huge fan of this bagged pasta meal.  It was just okay.  I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it again.  I was not impressed.  I relaxed the rest of the night and watched Revenge.  Oh my goodness!  I couldn’t believe that episode!  It was a good one!

Well that is all I have for this Monday.  I hope you have a lovely day!

  1. Too funny … my sister and I were JUST talking yesterday about doing Pizza Hut’s Book-It when we were kids. They still offer the program! She’s a teacher now and is doing it with her students. :)

I hope you feel much better today!
