5 Years Of Service…

Good Morning!  Happy Monday! I hope all of you had a great weekend!  What did you do this weekend?  Anything fun?  When we left off yesterday, Mike and I finally decided to leave the house in the afternoon to go to the supermarket.  It seemed like any kind of deal that I tried to do with coupons completely failed.  I’m not even sure why.  I definitely could have saved us at least $5 more dollars but my deals didn’t work right.  I think I need to be retrained on my couponing skills from Melissa.  This isn’t working.

When we got home we relaxed for a little while and then Mike’s parents and Ryan (Mike’s brother) came over for dinner.  I wasn’t really in the mood for cooking so we decided to order in Chinese food.

I started off my meal with a cup of Wonton Soup.

For my meal, I ordered Chicken with Broccoli and steamed white rice.

My dinner

I honestly can’t even remember when the last time I had Chinese food was.  It’s definitely been a while.  I really like the place by our house.  I am always happy with the food from there.  Plus, they give massive portions so I definitely have my lunch for work tomorrow.  I’m happy about that since I always have the hardest time trying to figure out what to bring.  Do you usually bring the same thing for lunch everyday or do you switch it up a bit?  Do you buy your lunch or bring it?  I always bring my lunch.  It’s very rare that I buy lunch at work.

You may be wondering what my blog post title means for today.  Well 5 years ago today, I started working at my job.  It wasn’t easy getting a job fresh out of college especially in the television industry which I was very passionate about working in.  I graduated college in May of 2006.  It took me 6 months to find a job after graduating.  It was a very long process.  I applied to a ton of different places and went in for interviews here and there.  The thing that put me back was that after I graduated I still was short a math class.  Lucky me, especially since math is my worst subject.  So I walked in graduation but I still had to complete a math class.  The college I graduated from wouldn’t count the math class that I took at my previous college.  It was ridiculous.

Was I really going to need math working in television?  I think not!  I had to do it though.  So that took up part of my summer but I was still actively looking for a job.  I finally came across my current job.  The interview was one of the longest interviews I ever had in my life.  I had to take a test on the computer, take a written test and I was interviewed by Human Resources and then someone in the specific department for the job that I was interviewing for.  It was a very grueling process especially for someone straight out of college.  I was told on the spot that I was hired and was going to be in the next training class.

Little did I know that in that training class is where I would meet one of my really good friends and now bridesmaid, Tarra.  We started at our job on the same exact day back in 2006.  I actually became really good friends with another girl in our training class but she only lasted at our job for about 6 months before she decided to go back to school.  I have met some of the most amazing people at my job and for that I am so thankful.

One of my really good friends, Jane, has since retired.  She retired last year and I think that was one of the hardest things to deal with at work.  She was like a motherly figure to me at work.  We would talk all the time about anything and everything.  She is such a wonderful person.  She has a really good heart.  We still talk and I am actually friends with her daughter who also works at my job.  It’s great to still be in touch with such a wonderful woman.  :)

I have another friend, Bob, who is also one of my best friends at work.  He is such a great person too and I am truly blessed to have met him.  We both share a strong love for Broadway and musicals.  He also enjoys trying new restaurants and taking pictures of food!

I may not want to stay at my current job forever.  It may not be the field that I really want to work in but I am blessed for my co-workers and my boss.  They truly make my day more tolerable.  For privacy reasons like I have mentioned before, I am not going to discuss where I work or anything of that nature.  I am celebrating today that I have spent 5 years at my current workplace.  Do you like your job or would you like to do something different?

I am looking forward to next Friday.  Management is taking people at my work out to a fancy restaurant to celebrate service anniversaries.  It’s going to be a 2 hour lunch and I was told we can order anything we want off the menu.  I’m happy that Tarra is going to be there with me so I won’t feel as uncomfortable.  I think it’s a nice gesture.  So I’m looking forward to experiencing that.

Alright, well I should get going now.  Have a great Monday!  :)

  1. Congrats on your 5 year anniversary! I hit 5 years next July and apparently during that month I’ll get an extra vacation day to use. ;) I’m not sure if this is my dream job, but I can’t say what my dream job would be so I’m happy with it. I get to go to a fancy dinner Thurs night for work, so excited (especially bc I don’t have to pay!).

  2. Congrats on 5 years! It’s nice that they take you guys out for a fancy lunch. I agree with the math requirements. They make you take all these crazy math classes that you’ll never use in your real life.

I love my current job of being a mommy, but that’s not really a job. I’m actually fixing up my resume because I’m trying to find a part time job in the legal field. I hated my last job, I loved the girls I worked with, but our boss was really crazy. She had a ton of health problems and would forget to take her medication some days and it would get scary at times. I’m glad I’m out of there! I don’t know what my dream job would be. I always wanted to work for the UN, but that’s not an easy place to get into. Maybe someday!

Melissa needs to share her couponing secrets! It would be cool if she did a guest post about how she does it. I would love to learn!

    • Thank you so much! :) I was shocked when I got that email about the lunch. I cannot wait. I totally agree with you! I don’t even remember how to do any of the math I had to learn for that class. I don’t use math at all while I’m at work. It’s ridiculous.

I think being a Mommy is a job! That is a full-time job! :) The legal field sounds like it would be a good field to get into. Good luck! Oh, my! Your old boss does sound like she was quite crazy! That’s awesome! You never know ;)

I asked her if she would want to and she definitely does! So look for it sometime relatively soon.

  3. Congratulations on five years!! That’s a huge deal in the television industry – seriously, it seems like things change so fast that it’s rare for people to stay with a company that long. It’s great that you’ve found somewhere you enjoy, though. People really do make all the difference (I totally found that with Action News – I know people who interned/worked at other stations and were not happy, but I absolutely loved every single minute of my time there, not only because of the job, but also because of the amazing co-workers). How cool that you and Tarra started on the same day. Have fun celebrating with her and everyone else!

I truly loved my journalism jobs, but (and something tells me this is obvious!), creative writing is my absolute passion. I adore getting to dive into my characters’ worlds and go along on their journeys as I write, edit, and revise. Now … if only an agent would sign me! ;)

    • Thank you so much! :) This is the longest I’ve ever stayed at any job. I’m proud of myself. :) I totally agree with you! Action News must have been an awesome internship! I can only imagine how amazing that must have been. It’s definitely my favorite local news station. I think it’s pretty cool that we started the same day too! Thank you! I cannot wait!

I seriously hope an agent signs you soon! Your work is amazing and you are so talented! They would be foolish not to sign you. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you! I know it will happen :)
